From Tina to Beyoncé: 15 Black Artists Who Redefined the VMAs

The inaugural MTV Video Music Awards were held on September 14, 1984, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. 

For over 40 years, the award show has premiered in major cities like New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, and Newark. This year, in its 42nd year, the show will premiere on September 7, 2025 on CBS network, with streaming capabilities on Paramount+.

When it comes to Black talent, there are plenty who’ve graced the stage. Most notably, Tina Turner in 1984 as the first Black woman to do so. 

Other well-known artists include:

Michael and Janet Jackson

Michael Jackson made his mark when his “Billie Jean” video aired on MTV, effectively shattering racial barriers on the network. Alongside sister Janet, sibling duo’s 1995 VMA performance and nominations for “Scream” were also a major moment. Janet Jackson’s impact extends beyond visuals, widely known as an artist who redefined pop and R&B, with decades of chart-topping hits.

TLC

The R&B trio made history at the 1995 VMAs by winning both Video of the Year and Viewer’s Choice for “Waterfalls.” This marked the first time an African-American act claimed both top honors in the same year.

Widely known as Baby girl, the 90s R&B sensation is credited with redefining R&B and mainstream pop with her futuristic production style and genre fusion, an impact that continues to influence artists today.

 

Missy Elliott

The Virginia-born rapper known for her innovative music and bold visuals was honored in 2019 with the Video Vanguard Award. Her VMA medley went down as one of the most electrifying performances ever.

Beyoncé

Fresh off leaving Destiny’s Child, the Houston native made her solo debut at the 2003 VMAs with “Crazy in Love,” a performance that solidified her status as a solo superstar. In 2009, she won Video of the Year for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and unexpectedly found herself at the center of one of the most viral VMA moments ever, when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift. Two years later, during her performance of “Love on Top,” she revealed her pregnancy with her first child, Blue Ivy Carter, mid-song, beaming and pointing to her belly. Prince stunned viewers with his captivating 1984 VMA performances, blending rock, funk, and pop in ways that pushed the boundaries of live music on television. 

Usher

Atlanta-born singer Usher had the early 2000s VMAs in a chokehold with high-energy performances and smooth choreography, showcasing his vocal range and dance skills. Hit songs like “Yeah!” and “U Got It Bad” made him a fan-favorite on the VMA stage.

Rihanna

Unforgettable is the best verb to describe Rihanna’s performances. Ranging from her 2011 medley of popular songs to her 2016 “Work” performance, the Bajan singer’s stage presence and ability to reinvent herself made every performance a cultural moment.

Drake

Beyond performing, the Canadian actor turned artist has secured multiple awards, including Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Collaboration, cementing his status as one of the most influential artists in VMA history.

OutKast

Megan Thee Stallion
