Interview:Reneé Billy-Hendrickson, BHX Management

“People remember how you made them feel, not about what you said, but how you made them feel,” is a mantra Renee Billy-Hendrickson lives by. Every interaction, she believes, leaves a lasting impression, influencing future encounters in unforeseen ways.

Renee embarked on her journey in fashion advertising two decade ago, contributing to renowned publications such as Complex, The Source, and Honey magazine. Reflecting on her time at The Source, she recalls, “It was definitely considered the hip-hop Bible at the time,” joining during its peak when excitement ran high with events like the Source Awards in Miami, showcasing the era’s greatest hip-hop artists.

Today, she has blossomed into an entrepreneur at the helm of BHX Management, her firm specializing in talent booking, brand partnerships, fundraising, and strategic planning. Among her esteemed clients are luminaries like Bevy Smith, Miss Lawrence, Eboni K. Williams, Michel Smith Boyd, Flo N’Gala, and Lisa Bonner.

“I have the pleasure of working with a gentleman by the name of Michel Smith Boyd, who’s an extraordinary interior designer and also a design star,” Renee enthuses, highlighting his prowess as an interior designer and design luminary. She actively seeks opportunities that showcase his talent to potential partners.

Renee’s expertise extends to event sponsorship, a skill honed during her publishing days, evidenced in her collaboration with Miss Lawrence on The Purpose Ball. “He asked me to help him secure sponsorships,” she remarks. A role she’s quite familiar with. “That’s what I did when I was working for the publications, I would go out an bring in pages, which is sponsorship revenue.”

Looking ahead, Renee is eager to support influencers, noting a significant pay disparity highlighted in a 2021 study where Black creators earned 35% less than their white counterparts. “I definitely feel like the influencers out there are leaving some money on the table.” She aims to rectify this imbalance, humorously stating, “I want to help them secure the bag—that’s what the kids say, right?”

For those seeking consulting partnerships, Renee advises alignment in values and enthusiasm for the mission. It’s about working with people who share the same passion. Her collaborations with Miss Lawrence and Michel Smith Boyd exemplify this synergy, enhancing their respective endeavors with shared dedication.
